If my child joins, what can they expect?
Students can expect a physical and mental challenge every time they step on our mats. They'll learn world-class techniques, make friends in our vibrant and welcoming community, build their confidence, and practice resilience.
Our students tend to progress quickly with consistent training and sometimes choose to compete once they have some experience!
Is BJJ safe for my child?
We take safety extremely seriously at our gym, which is why we take extra care in going over the rules of sparring and ensuring appropriate training partners. We also have multiple coaches supervising every class with special attention to safety.
BJJ is a combat sport without any striking or kicking, making it much safer than other full-contact sports.
Is BJJ helpful for children with disabilities?
There is tons of research that emphasizes how BJJ has changed many kids' lives for the better, especially those with disabilities.
BJJ can make kids comfortable with physical touch. It can give kids the ability to practice tolerating discomfort. It can give antsy children a physical outlet, and give kids with anxiety a confidence boost. Our instructors have lots of experience working with all kinds of disabilities, so get in touch to figure out how we can accommodate your child.
Do you separate classes by age?
Yes, we do! Splitting our classes by age allows us to provide the most focused, developmentally appropriate instruction possible.
Some of our classes are designed for ages 4-6, some designed for 5-9, some are 7+, and our Teen-Only class is for ages 12+.
We also offer different categories of classes that cater to different learning styles. Let's chat to figure out which classes are best for your child!
Can parents watch the classes?
It's totally up to you. We have a seating area where many parents choose to observe class, but you can absolutely choose to go run some errands on our bustling H St NE or relax at home. We've got it under control during class whether you're present or not!
What should my child bring/ wear to class?
Your child should wear comfortable, tight-fitting athletic attire (ideally without pockets or zippers), and bring a water bottle.
Do you offer family discounts?
Yes! If you're enrolling 3+ children from the same family, we can offer a discount to help offset the cost. Reach out and we'll discuss!
How will I know if my child is progressing?
In the short term, you'll witness your child's confidence, coordination, and athleticism skyrocket as they learn new techniques and gain an understanding of the sport. They'll even begin to develop a game-plan from all major positions!
In a few months, your child might be ready to test into our Advanced Kids BJJ class! The test will include some basic techniques from the major positions, a short vocab test, and they'll need to demonstrate an understanding of how a round of BJJ works. The advanced class gives kids a concrete goal to aim for in those first few months.
Can BJJ help my child deal with their bullies?
Absolutely. The principles of BJJ are rooted in self defense. BJJ promotes the idea that a smaller, weaker person CAN successfully
defend themselves against a bigger, stronger attacker– a principle that keeps the sport
interesting and equalizing for all body types.
Are there any etiquette rules to be aware of?
Students should arrive wearing appropriate athletic clothing and remove their shoes and socks before stepping on the mats. They should also have their hair tied back, nails cut short, jewelry removed, and any open wounds covered. We also ask that they refrain from training while sick.
