Is BJJ helpful for children with disabilities?
There is tons of research that emphasizes how BJJ has changed many kids' lives for the better, especially those with disabilities.
BJJ can make kids comfortable with physical touch. It can give kids the ability to practice tolerating discomfort. It can give antsy children a physical outlet, and give kids with anxiety a confidence boost. Our instructors have lots of experience working with all kinds of disabilities, so get in touch to figure out how we can accommodate your child.
Is BJJ safe for my child?
We take safety extremely seriously at our gym, which is why we take extra care in going over the rules of sparring and ensuring appropriate training partners. We also have multiple coaches supervising every class with special attention to safety.
BJJ is a combat sport without any striking or kicking, making it much safer than other full-contact sports.
If my child joins, what can they expect?
All of our classes are a mix of technique, sparring, and BJJ-related games. Students can expect a physical and mental challenge every time they step on our mats. They'll learn world-class techniques, make friends in our vibrant and welcoming community, build their confidence, and practice resilience.
Our students tend to progress quickly and sometimes even choose to compete in the sport once they have some experience!
Do you separate classes by age?
Some of our classes do, like our Littles BJJ class designed for ages 4-6, or our Teen-Only class for ages 12+.
But many of our classes are all ages, all levels. This allows for our older, more experienced students to take leadership roles by helping our younger students. It also allows siblings of different ages to train together! Let's chat to figure out which classes are best for your child.
Can parents watch the classes?
It's totally up to you. We have a seating area where many parents choose to observe class, but you can absolutely choose to go run some errands on our bustling H St NE or relax at home. We've got it under control during class whether you're present or not!
What should my child bring/ wear to class?
Your child should wear comfortable, tight-fitting athletic attire (ideally without pockets or zippers), and bring a water bottle.
Do you offer family discounts?
Yes! If you're enrolling 3+ children from the same family, we can offer a discount to help offset the cost. Reach out and we'll discuss!
Can BJJ help my child deal with their bullies?
Absolutely. The principles of BJJ are rooted in self defense. BJJ promotes the idea that a smaller, weaker person CAN successfully
defend themselves against a bigger, stronger attacker– a principle that keeps the sport
interesting and equalizing for all body types.
