What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

BJJ is a combat sport and self defense martial art based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. The flow of a jiu jitsu round typically consists of taking an opponent to the ground (through takedowns, wrestling, Judo throws or trips) or voluntarily taking bottom position, gaining dominant position, and forcing your opponent to “tap” in a submission via joint locks or chokes.

There are two types of training: gi and no gi. The gi is a special kimono made of sturdy material designed to allow you to pull someone. In no gi, students wear a uniform that mimics normal clothing. Students wear a snug, sweat- resistant shirt called a rashguard, and shorts/ leggings without pockets are worn to protect hands and feet from getting stuck.

Our gym offers both types of training for a complete BJJ training experience. BJJ is made up of thousands of techniques and positions, making it the perfect sport for lifelong learning.

I'm new to BJJ. Where do I start?

We're thrilled you're interested in joining our community and learning this new skill! You don't need any previous athletic or martial arts experience to get started. Just come as you are!

Capital MMA DC is the only gym in the DMV to create a tailored BJJ onboarding curriculum for its beginner students.

Fill out the form on the header of this site, and you'll be able to meet with an expert coach on your own schedule. From there, we'll teach you the basics of the sport, and show you how to keep yourself and others safe.

After that, you can join our group classes with the comfort of knowing that you, and all of your training partners, have gone through the same basics and safety training. No more floundering like a fish out of water in your first classes!

Join us for Foundations classes Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays for beginner-tailored lessons, or join our regular group classes for a bit more of a challenge.

Is it safe to practice BJJ?

We take safety extremely seriously at our gym, which is why we are the only gym in the area that has created a comprehensive onboarding program for beginners. This 3-session package of private lessons is specifically designed to teach you how to keep yourself and your partners safe, minimizing the risk of injury.

We understand that as busy professionals, parents, and students, we can't afford a serious injury because of a hobby. And while any sport has risk of an accident occurring, we do our best to implement rigorous safety standards and take extra care of our beginners.

What can I expect in classes?

All of our BJJ classes include a mix of technique and time for sparring. This gives students the opportunity to practice techniques on a resisting partner. This class structure allows you to get a fantastic workout in, hone your technique, and move at your own physical and intellectual pace. It's up to you and your partner to decide a safe intensity level for sparring.

At our gym, we don't require any special rules of etiquette. We only ask that you are respectful and hygienic. This means your nails are kept short, your hair is pulled back, jewelry is removed, and you are showered and clean.

Where are you located?

810 H St. NE, Washington DC, 20002. Let us know if you'd like to drop by to check out our space or classes!

Do you have a competition team?

Yes! Our Sunday Competition Training at 9am is open to anyone who wants to get an intense grappling workout in. Our Competition Team also meets on Tuesday nights at 7:30pm, but this training requires permission from a coach.

We recommend a bit of experience before joining these classes.
